Key costs at a glance
Typesetting and copyediting account for the largest share of expenditure on AdM.
Hosting, access and metrics form the next largest single category and include core infrastructure required by library subscribers.
Production and editorial also represent substantial areas of expenditure, reflecting the work involved in managing, preparing and publishing the journal to a high standard.
Business operations and the journal development fund account for similarly sized shares of cost.
Smaller but still significant allocations support sales and market development, printing and distribution, and editorial and owner compensations.
Costs in depth
Overall cost and article output
For 2027, EMS Press projects the cost of publishing AdM at approximately €85,000. This figure covers the staffing, overheads and publishing services needed to produce and disseminate the journal to the required standard. With a forecast output of around 120 articles, averaging 12 pages each, the projected average publishing cost per article is €710.
Typesetting and copyediting
The largest single share of expenditure for AdM falls within typesetting and copyediting. As with any mathematics journal, this reflects the specialist work involved in preparing articles containing substantial notation, formulae and technically demanding layouts. Maintaining consistency and accuracy at this level requires dedicated expertise, which is why EMS Press works with typesetters experienced in LaTeX and mathematical content.
Production and editorial
A substantial proportion of costs is also assigned to production and editorial. On the production side, this includes quality control, metadata preparation, article registration, submission to major scholarly indexes such as Scopus and Web of Science, and the final preparation of content for publication. It also covers the workflows required to assemble issues and ensure that articles are published consistently and accurately across formats and platforms.
Editorial costs relate to the ongoing management of the journal as a publishing operation. These include oversight of the submission system, coordination with the editorial board, support for appointments and governance, and monitoring of the article pipeline. Taken together, this work helps the Press and the journal maintain standards, manage throughput, and plan effectively over time.
Hosting, access and metrics
A significant share of the budget sits within hosting, access and metrics. This category covers core technical infrastructure, including the Press’s production and hosting platform, usage and access management through LibLynx, COUNTER-compliant reporting, and services such as IP Registry and OA Switchboard that support library-facing workflows. It also includes the staff time required to maintain and develop these systems.
Sales and market development
Sales and market development account for a meaningful portion of the 2027 forecast. This reflects the work involved both in supporting AdM through a new publishing arrangement and in establishing Launch to Open within the market. In practice, this includes outreach to libraries and institutions, webinars, conference activity, site visits, and related work undertaken by the Press and its sales partners. As the journal becomes more established within the EMS Press portfolio, this allocation should shift towards ongoing marketing support.
Printing and distribution
Printing and distribution remain a distinct cost category. These expenses reflect continued print demand alongside the increasing costs associated with print production and shipping. Showing them separately helps make clear how print-related costs contribute to the overall target.
Business operations and journal development
Business operations covers the wider costs of running the Press, including rent, legal support, accountancy and related overheads. A proportion of these shared costs is allocated to the journal through the Press’s overheads model.
The journal development fund is intended to provide resilience as well as room for future development. It allows the Press to respond to changing costs, including inflation, while also supporting improvements that strengthen the journal and the services around it. This may include investment in new technologies, responses to changing publishing requirements, or work on services that benefit the journal’s community, such as accessible publications.
