Abstract
This article is a survey of the theory of rank varieties for modules over finite groups and finite group schemes. We follow the development of the ideas over the nearly thirty years of the subject. The discussion also touches on modules of constant Jordan type and recent results on rank varieties for truncated polynomial rings.
