An optimization problem is studied that was already considered by A. Fricke. It consists in finding among all pairs of congruent axialsymmetric plane surface patches with given length of the major axis that are bent and fastened to cylindric surfaces that which includes maximal volume. By a methodically new approach, this problem ist solved completely from the analytical and numerical point of view, including hitherto unsettled questions (existence, unity and convergence of approximate methods).
