EMS Press raises the bar for accessible mathematical publishing

EMS Press has launched a new publication format that improves the accessibility of mathematical articles for people with disabilities, making research content easier to read, navigate and interpret across devices and assistive technologies.
The new format provides full-text HTML versions of EMS Press articles alongside the familiar PDF. Built specifically for mathematical publishing, it improves readability on phones, tablets and desktop screens, while also supporting better search, selection, copying and pasting of mathematical content.
A central focus of the project is making mathematical articles more accessible to readers using assistive technologies. Mathematical publications present particular challenges in this respect, especially when complex formulae, figures, references and document structures are available only in static PDF form. By embracing the web as a publication platform, EMS Press is making mathematical research more flexible, machine-readable and usable for a wider range of readers.
The technology has been developed in-house by EMS Press, a community-owned society publisher, and is built on open, future-proof industry standards, including JATS XML and MathML. This approach creates additional value for all readers, while supporting a collaborative publishing ecosystem that benefits the broader mathematical community.
The production workflow has been developed in collaboration with CompuScript for articles in Groups, Geometry, and Dynamics and the Journal of Noncommutative Geometry. The first accessible full-text articles are now available, including:

The launch builds on EMS Press’s broader work towards accessible mathematical publishing, including the recently announced joint author guidelines for preparing accessible mathematical content.
EMS Press will continue to roll out accessible full-text HTML publication to further journals in its portfolio, reflecting its commitment to open standards, community-owned infrastructure and publishing practices that help make mathematics more accessible to everyone.
