Abstract
Surface bundles over the circle are examples of 3-manifolds which play a very important role in 3-dimensional topology. In this chapter, we shall give a survey of research on these manifolds, starting from the earliest work on this topic by Poincaré, and ending with quite recent work on volumes of hyperbolic surface bundles, spending much time on major work by Thurston in between.
