Abstract
Minor perturbations to a linear operator may drastically change its spectrum, and hence the difficulty of deciding whether or not a numerically computed quantity is zero causes problems in spectral theory. The purpose of this expository paper is to illustrate such instability phenomena by some examples with Toeplitz-like operators and matrices.
