A gauge field theory is proposed for symmetric spinor fields of valence on a flat spacetime which generalizes the Maxwell theory of electromagnetism. Further we study first-order equations for symmetric spinor fields of valence which are consistent in arbitrarily curved spacetimes, conformally and gauge invariant and whose solutions satisfy the equations for the potentials of massless fields in flat spacetimes.
