All journals open access in 2025 following another successful Subscribe To Open round

EMS Press publishes all journals open access in 2025 for the second consecutive year, following a successful Subscribe To Open (S2O) round.
Our commitment to open access continues to achieve meaningful results: all 22 journals in our Subscribe To Open (S2O) programme will be published as open access for the 2025 subscription period. For the second consecutive year, our entire annual journal portfolio will be fully open access, combining both S2O and Diamond models. At EMS Press, we have demonstrated that open access publishing can not only be sustainable, but need not compromise on fairness by operating without article processing charges or other publication barriers. Our journey from a traditional subscription model to a fully open access publisher shows that alternative paths are possible. “Moving into our second year of complete open access publishing represents more than just maintaining momentum – it validates the long-term vision we set when EMS Press was re-established in 2019, identifying Subscribe to Open as the model best suited to serve the needs of the mathematics community”, says André Gaul, CEO of EMS Press. “Despite a challenging economic environment, librarians have demonstrated their support for equitable funding models of open access. We cannot take this support for granted, nonetheless we find this direct endorsement of S2O encouraging and we are proud to prove that a complete and immediate transition to open access is possible – a goal that author fee models (APCs) and cumbersome transformative agreements have failed to achieve”. Central to our success is our innovative "solidarity model" – an approach that thoughtfully distributes shared package revenues to support journals with lower incomes, ensuring they can reach their sustainability thresholds while maintaining high-quality publishing standards. We've refined this model over the years, balancing sustainability with fairness by considering both publication costs and future growth potential. The S2O model represents more than just a publishing strategy – it embodies our vision for equitable academic publishing. It supports open science values, promotes quality-based publishing over commercialism, and addresses the growing demand for open access in a sustainable way. This approach continues to be well received by our subscribers, reinforcing our conviction that we're on the right path. Details for the 2026 S2O round will be announced later this year. In the meantime we warmly encourage libraries, consortia, funders, and other national groups to contact us to learn more about supporting the S2O initiative.
